Discover St Agnes

There is so much to do in and around St Agnes, from surfing to walking to cycling and other outdoor adventures
Surfing

Like many areas along the North Cornish Coast, St. Agnes and Porthtowan are popular surf spots, and have thriving surf lifeguard clubs.

The area is generally regarded as one for experienced surfers only, but there are a couple of excellent surf schools in the area if you fancy taking to a board for the first time.

St. Agnes is home to Surfers Against Sewage, a fantastic environmental campaign group with a mission to rid the UK coastline of sewage. To read more about their essential work and to get involved in keeping our waters clean, take a look at their website:

Walking

With over 70 footpaths and bridleways, direct access to the South West Coast Path, and sitting in a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, St. Agnes is a haven for walkers of all ages and abilities. Paths are well marked and maintained, and whether you fancy a coastal stomp, a gentle amble from pub to pub, or a cross-country ramble, there’s something for you.

For interactive walking guides to suit all abilites, the South West Coast Path site is a great place to start.

For fascinating audio described trails that guide you through our countryside’s rich heritage, you can download the brilliant Cornish Mining app here.

Free local walking guides can also be safely downloaded from the St. Agnes Forum, and include some stunning inland walks around St. Agnes, Porthtowan, Blackwater, Mithian and Mount Hawke.

Lots of our shops and businesses sell walking maps, and our Local Information Points are a good place to stop for advice when you’re in the area.

Cycling

St. Agnes nestles among miles and miles of breathtaking Cornish coast road, which offer stunning views and challenging inclines. But it is also just 4 miles north of the popular Coast to Coast trail, which makes it a popular destination for young cyclists, and families who enjoy life on two wheels.

This trail runs for 11 miles from the lovely coastal village of Portreath to Devoran on the South Coast, and is almost entirely on purpose built cycle paths or quiet country lanes.

Part of the Mineral Tramways Cycle Network, the trail is flat (ponies pulling copper ore and coal didn’t like hills), making it ideal for children and young riders, but along the route there are plenty of extra tracks with more demanding sections for those who like challenges!

For more information, see Aggie Cycles based in St. Agnes Village offering bike hire, tours and pick up/drop off and Cornwall Cycle Trails, who also hire bikes from their base just outside Porthtowan

Activities for Kids

St. Agnes offers the perfect environment for a holiday in Cornwall. Safe and friendly with plenty to explore in a relatively compact area.

We are particularly suited to those familise that like the great outdoors, with body-boarding, cycling, skating, rock-pooling and woodland walks all available.

For older kids or rainy days, larger indoor and themed attractions are only a short drive or bus-rde away when you fancy a day-trip.

But instead of taking our word for it, hear what some local children of varying ages told us they like to do in and around St. Agnes:

Dog Friendly

We love dogs and the parish is one of the best areas in the country to visit with your pets.

Wherever you see the yellow dog icon on this site you’ll know that your four-legged friends will be welcome.

The glorious South West coast path passes straight through St. Agnes, and is the perfect place for a stomp, but please take good care when walking with your dog. The SWCP site has a good guide to making sure you all have a good day out.

St. Agnes Beacon, which is owned by the National Trust, is a great place to walk dogs any time of year.

Please note: It can get very hot in Cornwall in the summer, and dogs can quickly get into trouble if left in hot cars. Please don’t EVER leave your dog in your car while you go to the beach or pop to the shops – there is almost always somewhere to tie them up outside, with a water bowl to keep them cool.
